Pondering Orphans this Christmas

Most of you will likely pretend you never saw this post, because it’s kind of an uncomfortable topic for lots of people. But I’m going to say it anyway. Recently, Nathan and I began praying that God will break our hearts for the things that break His. And He is. Our hearts have been heavy for orphans for some time now and the burden is not getting lighter. Literally millions of kids all over this world will go to sleep tonight without a momma and daddy to tuck them in or give them a kiss goodnight. When I look at my Libby, Caleb & Sara sleeping peacefully in their warm beds each night, I frequently wonder why we are the blessed ones. What if that was my child crying, cold, hungry, abandoned? Wouldn’t I be on the first plane out to get to my babies if I knew they were all alone in some other city in the world? Wouldn’t I spend everything I had? Wouldn’t I do anything to get them back? And if I simply couldn’t rescue them, wouldn’t I pray, pray, pray that someone else would go for me?

Christmas is the time of year that we celebrate God sending His son Jesus to be the ransom for sinful humanity. In a spiritual sense, we are all orphans wallowing in our own filth, abused, cold, sick, and dying alone. But God has compassion on us, even while we are still pathetic, squalling, unlovely orphans. He offers us adoption, a chance to become a beloved part of His very own family. He was willing to sacrifice that which was most dear to Him, His only son, to ransom us from our sinful state. If adoption is that important to God, shouldn’t it also be that important to me?

Libby’s Sunday School Christmas program this year has been particularly moving for me. The words to one of the songs the kids sang were “I’ve been blessed to be a blessing. I’ve received so I can give. And I must tell the world what God has done, ‘cause I’ve been blessed to bless someone.” The chorus to the last song they sang says, “Carry your candle. Run to the darkness. Seek out the hopeless, confused and torn. Hold out your candle for all to see it. Take your candle, and go light your world.” As many times as I have heard these same songs rehearsed over the past 3 months, they never fail to get my attention.

There are two families we know who are at this moment going through the final steps to bring four precious children home from orphanages in another country. God willing, they will all be home soon to celebrate their very first Christmas together. These families are a light to the world by sharing the blessings they have received, and mirroring God’s unconditional love for us to their new children. Obviously, not everyone is called to adopt, but we are all called to serve. For years now, we have been praying that God would open the doors so we can adopt. While we wait, we’re looking for ways to help orphans and families who are adopting. Just last week, our church deacons gave us their blessing to organize an orphan/adoption ministry in our church. We’re nervous and excited about the opportunity, and we’re praying for God’s leading. As crazy as it may be to run with candles, we’re sprinting for those lost in that darkness. I have a feeling we won’t need to look very far. . .

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress…" James 1:27

Caleb & Libby in the Church Christmas Program

Libby has been practicing singing in the choir for the kids Christmas program at church for the past few months. The performance was this past Sunday and she did great! Caleb also sang with his Sunday school classmates before the older kids performed their play. All of the kids did a super job! I finally got it all posted to Youtube yesterday - after I unhappily discovered that my Sony Handycam video camera is not compatible with Windows Vista on my laptop - no matter WHAT tricks I tried. I finally gave in and put the video on the old desktop computer that is still running Windows XP. Using the desktop, meant I didn't have a decent movie editing software, so the Christmas program is divided up into approximately 3-4 minute clips. I'm starting to seriously consider making the switch to Apple after all. . . :)

Smashed iPod Lives to Play Another Day

Yesterday, my inquisitive little Caleb-man decided it would be a great idea to stand on the little art stool and mess with the porcelain nativity scene characters. I told him to get down before he broke something or fell down - too late. Just then the stool flipped and he came crashing down on my iPod touch - you know, the one I just got this summer? He had been playing a game on it and then abandoned it on the floor while he climbed up to play with the shepherds and wise men. The glass was cracked in several places and there was a nice little dent across the back, but it was still running. I was pretty mad and I guess I yelled a little when I thought it was done for. Caleb was heartbroken and kept apologizing for breaking it. As frustrated as I was, I really couldn't stay mad at him - he was so pathetic! It was an accident, after all.

After a little online research, I figured my options were to have the glass replaced at the Apple store for a good chunk of money, buy a new iPod for an even bigger chunk, or I could buy an inexpensive replacement glass faceplate and do the repair myself. I was feeling brave and a bit cheap, so I ordered a replacement part from Amazon.com.

When I got home from work around 8:30 tonight, I was elated to see that the new faceplate had already arrived! I got the kids to bed, watched a couple of how-to YouTube videos, and then began surgery. I used a small flat blade screwdriver, a hobby knife, and a tongue depressor to open it up. It took me a good bit longer than the guys in the YouTube video, but I finally got the faceplate off. Then I got the itty bitty little digitizer ribbon cable attached and snapped the new glass into place. Presto! My iPod is now as good as new!

Nathan spent the last half-hour "testing" it (playing games), and it works great. At least I know how to fix it the next time Caleb lands on it.

Puppets!

The kids were bugging me to buy them some puppets from a catalog they were looking at during lunch this afternoon. I thought it might be fun to make them instead, so I did a little looking around for puppet pattern info online. After a quick trip to the craft store for some styrofoam balls, puppet hair supplies, and a sheet of foam, this is what we came up with! Both puppets are made from pieces of left-over fleece in my fabric bin. They have styrofoam eyes, pom-pom noses, and little heart shaped felt tongues (that you can't see in these pictures). Caleb has christened his "Puppet Joe" and Libby's is "Princess Lana". They were actually pretty easy to make (except for hot-gluing all the curly strands of Princess Lana's hair to her head). I think we might make a few more in different colors if they remain popular with the little people. Libby and Caleb just carried the puppets up to bed with them for the night. Here's hoping they don't stay up too late chatting with their new friends.

Indian Summer Afternoon

Here's Libby riding her bike with no training wheels! We took them off this afternoon, and away she went. She rides her bike now like she's known how her whole life. She is so proud of her new accomplishment.

Sara started walking on her own last Saturday and is loving wobbling around the house getting into mischief. She is on her second set of germs already this fall. We are going through tissues at a rate of a box each day.

Caleb is loving being the boy in the family. He entertains himself with his little Hotwheels cars while Libby does her schoolwork in the morning and then spends his afternoons playing with her and Sara.

The Little Rascals

Here's Libby, Sara and Caleb being silly while I was trying to get a nice picture of them. Never got that great photo, but I got some funny ones!

Sewing for Libby's doll

Here are some of the dresses I've made for Libby's doll Alexa so far this year. I sewed the newest evening gown last night out of a blue satin remnant I found at the craft store last week. Libby was so excited!

Here's a cute colonial style day dress from some scraps in my fabric bin. I made this one last Thursday evening and Libby got to stay up until I was finished with it. I love the circular poofy skirt - it has crinoline sewed underneath to fluff it out - so cute!

A cute yellow summer dress from fabric Libby picked out this summer.

The all-important flannel nightgown for keeping warm on cool nights. . .

And also a prairie dress and contrasting apron that we made this summer - this one was by far the most work of all the dresses due to the ruffles along the hem and over the sleeves. This was a two-day project instead of a single evening job!

We have plans for a few more coming up soon. My fabric scrap box is beginning to run low, so if anyone knows of a good place to get remnants, I'd love to hear about it!

Caleb's 4th Birthday Party

Caleb blows out his candles in one giant puff.

Thrilled with his Superman cake!

Look at the size of the piece that Papa cut for him!

Eating his cake the fast way.

Caleb's frosting moustache :)

A slow-mo of Caleb socking Uncle Zack in the nose while horsing around.

Waiting for his presents. . .

So excited for his new Thomas movie!

Tons of presents for one very happy little four year old! Thank you Grandma and Papa, Uncle Zack, Uncle Josh, Uncle Danny and Aunt JoyC for making this little guy's day!

Going for the last swim of the year in his clothes!

Libby swimming in her clothes, too!

The whole thing started with Caleb and Libby getting little buckets of water from the edge, then just getting their feet wet, then their legs. Next, Caleb jumped in and got soaked. Then Libby dumped a bucket of water over her head and jumped in, too! Papa, Nathan, and Zack were closing the pool while these pictures were being taken.

Goodbye, Pool, until next summer!

Caleb's Birthday Cake!

Here's my baking project for the weekend - Caleb's 4th birthday cake! I saw this design online while I was looking for Superman cakes. This one looked really cool, so I tried it. It uses the frozen transfer method - pretty much you trace the mirror image of your design on a sheet of plastic with frosting, then freeze it for 1-2 hours. Once it's frozen, you peel it off the plastic and stick it on the cake. It didn't come out exactly like the one I saw, but I am really happy with it for a first timer! Caleb can't wait to get into it. I even got the cake box to fit it, so hopefully it will make it to the party without being wrecked by cats or kids. Next, photos of the party tomorrow. . . :)

March Madness

The past week has been a whirlwind at our house! I sincerely hope that the rest of the month settles down a good bit.
We started last Saturday with Libby getting her ears pierced. This was a special prize for her since she had nearly finished her reading book and has a great handle on reading. She picked out her birthstone studs which are pink, of course. She flinched a little when they pierced her ears, and then gave me the stink eye until she saw herself in the mirror. She couldn't stop grinning and could hardly wait to show them off to everyone.

On Sunday we drove to Mom and Dad R's house for lunch after church. While we were driving, Sara decided to eat Libby's sunday school project - a "tamborine" made from paper plates stapled together with crepe paper streamers attached. Sara dutifully gummed away on the streamers until her face and hands were stained a lovely shade of dark blue. The color didn't completely come off until Tuesday.
On Monday I worked someone else's shift in the morning at the vet and came home just after noon to go over Libby's kindergarten books with her for the day. I had just started on making dinner - a nice roast beef - when I noticed that Pepsi the dog was desperately asking to go outside. I took her out. Then I took her out again. And again. Every few minutes she would jump up and beg to go out. Finally, she threw up a big tummy full of dog food. I thought she should feel better, but after drinking a bowl of water, she began to litteraly swell up before my eyes. She threw up more food on the kitchen floor and then downed another bowl of water. Karrie came over to watch the kids for me until Nathan got home, while I rushed Pepsi back to the vet to have her examined. Dr. Bob graciously waited for me to arrive and then took an x-ray of Pepsi's belly. Turns out she had the biggest stomach any of us at work have ever seen on an x-ray - like a basketball/watermelon/beachball. Dr. Bob induced vomiting and Pepsi duly vomited - 10 times (not including the quart of food she vomited in the van). We weighed her on the way in at 62.4 lbs. On the way out, she weighed 56.3 lbs. When I got home with her late Monday night, we discoved that she had helped herself to the big bag of dog food in the basment and had eaten over 6 lbs of food that day. What a pig!

Tuesday was a little quieter thankfully. I worked some on laundry and housework, but Caleb and Sara were fussy and coming down with a cold. Nathan and I started back on our P90X workout again that evening. We were exhausted and fell into bed and immediately to sleep.
Wednesday, was another crazy busy day at work. I also received an email from a Siberian cat breeder in Russia about a kitten that is available. We have been trying to find a new female to add to our "cattery" for almost a year now with no luck. The person who was originally going to buy this kitten fell through and I was next on the list if I was interested. I emailed back that, Yes! I am interested.

Thursday was another crazy day at home. It started out with a lot of promise and the sun was shining to boot! I took all three kiddoes to the grocery store with me. They were all so good! I praised them all the way home. Then Libby played in the van with Sara while I unloaded groceries. When it was time for her to come in the house when I had finished, she slipped on the ice in the driveway and smacked her head on the van floorboard. The hit was incredibly loud and was immediately followed by her screaming. It took some time for her to calm down. By then there was a nice egg on the back of her head. Thankfully, she showed no signs of a concussion. Libby's new Bun-bun from ebay had just come in the mail, so that helped to distract her. Later in the afternoon, I was getting dinner ready in the kitchen and stopped to pet Petunia on the way by. I noticed that her top right canine tooth was broken off, so another call to the vet. I scheduled her for an exam on Friday. After dinner, Libby finally finished the very last lesson in her reading book! She was so proud of herself and we are too! Nathan and I did another torture, er exercise, session of P90X and went to bed. Friday morning was also sunny, but cold. I took Petunia to work with me for her exam. Dr. Mark thought he may be able to save her tooth and decided to fix it that same afternoon. When he got her knocked out and really started poking around in her mouth, he discovered that the tooth was too badly damaged to keep and pulled it. He also found 2 smaller teeth that needed pulled. They saved her teeth for me in a little bottle to show to the kids at home. After a very busy day at work, I went home to find out that Libby has her first loose tooth! She is really excited and can't wait until the tooth fairy pays her a visit sometime soon.
Saturday was my day off. We were excited to have a nice quiet day at home together. Around 3 in the afternoon, Libby started complaining about stomach cramps. By 3:30 she was doubled over in pain crying every time she had a cramp. We spent nearly an hour with her in and out of the bathroom assuming that she was having gas pains. Finally, I called the doctor's office. They put me on the line with an on-call pediatrician who said I should take her to the urgent care clinic in Parma - NOT even remotely close to our house. He went on and on about what hospitals and clinics were covered by my insurance and then told me to "do myself a favor" and take her to the Akron Children's Hospital ER. Poor Libby had been crying and miserable the whole time and even begged to go to the doctor - something she would NEVER do normally. I finally got off the phone 30 minutes later and went to tell her that we were going to the hospital. She was asleep. The poor little girl hasn't taken a nap in years, so we knew she was wiped out. As her temperature was normal and her belly was soft, we decided to let her sleep. When she woke up an hour later, she was completely fine. We were so relieved that she felt better and also glad to know that we hadn't taken her to the ER with a $100 co-pay for no reason. Whew! Also on Saturday I received word back from the lady in Russia that we could have the kitten, but that she has a friend who will be flying to the US in early May and that we could meet him in New York with the kitten. This will surely be another fun adventure and is to be continued. . . We spent the evening baking cookies and playing games with the kids. Needless to say, we skipped exercising on Saturday.
So, Sunday is here again. We are again visiting with Mom and Dad R and hoping for a much quieter week this time. You may notice that Caleb was barely mentioned in this post. That is because he has been incident free this week.I'm getting a little worried about what happens when it's his turn to get into trouble. Yikes! Keeping my fingers crossed for a week of calm and relaxation. . . Ha ha!
